Maps of Flood Threat and Maps of Flood Risk in the Domanižanka Riverbasin, 1st Part

Project Summary :
Planned timetable: October 2008 - December 2009
Coordination/ research workplace: WRI Bratislava
Responsible researcher/coordinator: Ing. Miroslav Lukáč,PhD.
Co-researchers: Mgr. Katarína Mravcová

The task was ordered by the Slovak Water Management Enterprise, - the branch Piešťany. Based on the European Directive on the Assessment and Management of Floods the Slovak Republic, as a member state of the European Union, has the duty to elaborate flood hazard and flood risk maps by the end of 2013, which will be used as the basic document for flood risk management plans.
The objective of this task was to develop flood hazard and flood risk maps in the riverbasin of the Domanižanka River in Považská Bystrica. The maps were developed for different hydrologic and hydraulic flood situations, by which a combination of numerical hydrodynamic modelling and GIS tools was applied. The maps show the extent of possible risk areas during extreme floods, threats for housing and other important infrastructural objects within the boundaries of the town Považská Bystrica.
The suitability of the methods used in the process of flood hazard and risk maps has been demonstrated as the practical example. These works will be launched nationally to meet the obligations of Slovakia as an EU Member State. The recommendations were taken into account in preparation of national legislation on flood risk assessment. The prepared study is the first comprehensive application in accordance with the Directive. The methodology used in this study can be applied for studies in other river-basins and river courses in Slovakia.
