Project NORMAN - Network of Reference Laboratories and Partner Organisations for Monitoring and Biomonitoring of Pollutants Threatening Environment

Project Summary :
Timetable: September 2005 – November 2008
Researcher responsible: Ing. Katarína Šilhárová
Other Researchers: Ing. Peter Tolgyessy, CSc., Ing. Zoltán Krascsenits, Ing. Branislav Vrana, PhD.
Cooperating organisations: Consortium (26) of scientific organisations from the whole   Europe

The project NORMAN is solved within the programme EU 6FP PRIORITA 1.1.6.3, sub-project Global Change and Ecosystems and is aimed at coordination, development and implementation of monitoring methodologies of priority pollutants in the network of reference laboratories and similar organisations for the reason of harmonisation and enhancement of EU capacities for monitoring of these substances.
The final output will be the protocol applicable in the wide range of monitoring programmes within the European Union. The main objective is to create standardised validation protocols used in research, expert, reference and routine laboratories.
A list of emerging substances was created, which is published at the NORMAN website and applied in databases EMPODAT (database of emerging pollutants occurrence), EMPOMAP (database of experts, institutions and projects concerning “emerging pollutants”) and EMPOMASS (mass spectra database of unknown compounds). Finally, the validation protocol was commented, and consequently it was finalised.
The project was finished in November 2008 after the final meeting of researchers in Paris in October. The project Norman created a basis for creation of „permanent network“- the Association of European laboratories for hazardous substances, in which a cooperation of European reference laboratories will continue. Slovakia is represented by the consortium WRI/EI.
