Certified and acredited laboratories

Water Research Institute (WRI) was founded in 1951 pursuant to the Decree No. 40/51 of the Minister of Building Industry. Since 1974, the WRI has been a government-subsidized organization. Since 2005, the WRI is a holder of quality certificate according to the standard ISO 9001.

Current WRI activity is defined by the updated Foundation Charter issued by the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic on 29 May 2006 No. 21/2006 - 1.6 determining the responsibilities to perform the main activities of the institute. The WRI is the only institution in Slovakia providing the complex water management research and other related activities resulting from the needs of water management of the Slovak Republic. Basic activity of the Institute is scientific research, expertise and development activity, professional water management consulting and dealing with water management - ecological problems.

Scientific - Research Activity

Solving complex scientific - research issues concerning quantitative and qualitative water management balance, regulation of discharge conditions, water management in geographic and local administration units
Examination of protection and use of atmospheric, surface and ground water resources - scientific research, methodological, expertise activity; monitoring and professional consulting in hydrology and hydraulics, quality and technology of water and wastewater treatment
Scientific research, expertise and other activities based on the activities of the National Water Reference Laboratory in Slovakia
International scientific - technical and expert cooperation

Activity emanating from the Acts No. 364/2004 Coll., No. 442/2002 Coll., No. 666/2004 Coll. and No. 188/2003 Coll.

Processing supporting materials of comprehensive strategy, framework and long-term prospective of water management development in the Slovak Republic
Elaboration of water management planning documents
Processing the framework and development of database systems of water management; balance mathematical, economic and legislative tools
Monitoring of water quality in transboundary courses
Organising events to increase the professional knowledge of water management staff
Observation control of methodological, technological processes and standards
Elaboration of flood protection concepts in the territory of the Slovak Republic
Preparation of inundation territory maps, risk maps and level regimes on water courses

Expert activities for water management in Slovakia

Calibration of hydrometric equipment for measuring the velocity of liquids and calibration of flow meter equipment, measuring discharges and water levels in the facilities including guarantee test measurements of turbines and pumps
Elaboration of handling regulations and operating instructions of waterworks, including special handling regulations and solution of break and flood waves process
Administration, operation and development of hydraulic laboratories
Sampling and making analyses of water quality and water related matrices
Development and administration of information systems of water management

International co-operation and activities

Participation of institute experts in the activities of international organisations - in international commissions and associations
Membership of institute experts in international scientific and expert organisations
Participation of the institute in performing the obligations emanating from the agreements within bilateral and multilateral international cooperation
Participation of the institute staff in missions abroad for the purpose of observing common programme, membership in international organisations, participation in exhibitions, conferences and scientific expert occasions
Participation in solution and using the outcomes of international programmes
Inviting and Receiving representatives of international organisations to the Water Research Institute
Implementation of European (CEN), international standardization (ISO) and EU legislation into the Slovak legislation
International cooperation with partner institutions in neighbouring countries in the sphere of science and research (Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic) as well as within transboundary water boards
Elaboration and submission of proposals of the projects co-financed by EU

Floods 2010: Causes, Development and Experience

in 3. - 5. November 2010 will be a conference with international participation organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Regional Development in the Hotel Baník in Štrbské pleso.
