Water Research Institute (WRI) was established by the former Ministry of Building Industry in 1951. It is a public organization under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment SR. The institute applies quality management system in compliance with the standard ISO 9001.

The scope of responsibilities and activities of the Water Research Institute is defined under the Foundation Charter No. 21/2006 - 1.6. issued by the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic on 29 May 2006.The WRI is the only organization in Slovakia conducting comprehensive water management research and other related activities resulting from the needs of water sector in the Slovak Republic. Its main activities are aimed at research and development, expertises, professional water management consulting services and solutions for water management and ecological problems.

Our young scientist awarded on the occasion of the Week of Science 2012

RNDr. Zuzana Horváthová, PhD.,a young scientist from the Water Research Institute, was awarded the Prize of the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic "The Personality of Science and Technology Under 35 Years of Age". She is a resarcher working at the WRI Groundwater Department and focusing mainly on the problems related to pesticides and their environmental impacts.

Further step in ship waste management on the Danube


CO-WANDA Project (Convention for Waste Management for Inland Navigation on the Danube) was launched  on October 1, 2012. Eleven partners from nine Danube countries (Water Research Institute for Slovakia) are involved in the project implementation. The project objective is to draft an international convention facilitating implementation of a modern system of cross-border ship waste management along the Danube.
